About Nick

WRITER AND CO-EXECUTIVE PRODUCER of the hit Fox drama, Prison Break, Nick Santora is a born-and-bred New Yorker.

After graduating from Columbia Law School in 1996, Nick practiced law full-time in New York City until 2001 when he moved to Los Angeles with his family to pursue a career as a professional writer. This decision was spurred by Nick's first screenplay winning "Best Screenplay of the Competition" at the 2001 New York International Independent Film Festival.

Since arriving in California, Nick has written and/or produced for several television series such as The Sopranos, Law & Order and The Guardian. He has enjoyed writing for a living substantially more than litigating for a living.

A Message from Nick

BECAUSE I'M A FILM AND TELEVISION WRITER in Hollywood, my friends can't understand why I keep saying my novel, "Slip & Fall", being published is the most exciting thing that's happened in my professional career. They all assume that after writing for iconic shows like Prison Break, Law & Order and The Sopranos, traveling to produce filming "on location", hearing your dialogue spoken by some of our country's most talented actors, having your words printed on a few hundred pages and bound in a book would be almost anticlimactic. They couldn't be more wrong.

Since I was seven years old I knew that I wanted to be a writer. I would walk through the library as a kid and just stare at all the books on the shelves, run my fingers over the names of the authors, read an entire book in one sitting and then deferentially place the book back in its shelf so others could have the same magical experience I just had. I so badly wanted a story of mine to be on one of those shelves one day.

My writing journey first took me to the world of television and film, and I thank God that it did. I've collaborated with some of the most wonderful and talented people I'll ever meet – from Emmy winners to fresh-faced, first-year staff writers and I've learned something from all of them.

However, I always wanted to write books. As much as I love writing for the entertainment industry, and hope to do so forever, I've always wanted to tell a story that was completely mine. You see, in film and tv, even if the script is yours, the final product is an amalgam of your vision and the actors' interpretation and the director's thought process and at the end of the day you get this wonderful product that is the result of pure collaboration. And though you are proud of yourself and of the whole team that made that film, the product isn't 100% yours.

But novels are different. Novels are purer story-telling, simpler story-telling. There are no filters, no middle-men, between writer and audience. The writer simply hands the story over to the reader and says: "Here. I wrote this for you. I truly hope you enjoy it."

I can't express how thrilled I am that I have been given this wonderful opportunity by Borders to be the debut author of their brand new publishing arm. They could have picked any author, any book, but for whatever reason they chose "Slip & Fall" to be their first novel and it is an understatement to say that I am honored.

I'm just a guy from New York who has loved to write his entire life – and now I get to do that for a living. I've done nothing to deserve such good fortune … but I'll take it gladly and humbly.

Every day that I get to write is a joy for me. And being able to share "Slip & Fall" with you … well, I can't find the words to describe how great that makes me feel. Remember, I've been hoping for this moment since I was 7 years old.

So, here goes nothing … "Here. I wrote this for you. I truly hope
you enjoy it."
