THIS WEEK the story of Motown

With an $800 loan from his family, Berry Gordy, Jr., established Motown Records in January 1959. Within a few years, this Detroit-based outfit was selling more singles and releasing more hits than any other record company, pumping out music that so greatly mastered the genre that the name "Motown" stood as a generic term for all '60s soul music records, regardless of the company that issued them.
