The City of Ember

Jeanne DuPrau's fascinating novel The City of Ember is set deep underground in a city built as a last refuge for the human race. But Ember's once powerful generator is failing, and the great lamps that illuminate it are starting to flicker. In this escape adventure, two teenagers must unlock the mystery of their city and race against time to help the citizens escape before the lights go out forever! This exciting story is coming to life in theaters this fall in a film starring a powerful cast that includes Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, Tim Robbins, and Martin Landau.

LINA MAYFLEET (Saoirse Ronan)
Lina Mayfleet is a firecracker of a girl. She overflows with energy and creativity so she is delighted when she learns that her after-school assignment is as a Messenger - running through the streets delivering word of mouth communications between the citizens of Ember, a vital job since the telephone system broke down. Lina is asked to deliver a cryptic message to the Mayor. This sets off an unexpected chain of events, and Lina and her friend Doon must decipher the clues to the once-glittering City’s existence and help the citizens escape, before the lights go out forever.

DOON HARROW (Harry Treadaway)
Doon Harrow is Lina’s childhood friend and classmate. An intense boy, who lives with his father Loris, his ambition is to work on the City’s Generator. When he draws his assignment as Messenger, he swaps with Lina, taking her job as a Pipeworks Laborer. Once underneath the City in the Pipeworks, he begins to explore and realizes his fears that the mighty Generator may be diminishing are well founded. He joins forces with Lina, and they race against time to solve an ancient mystery, and save their fellow citizens from the encroaching darkness.

MAYOR COLE (Bill Murray)
Mayor Cole is the City of Ember’s larger than life Mayor. On the last day of school term, the Mayor presides over the assignment of jobs for the children. Led astray by his own greed and gluttony, the Mayor has a secret that Lina and Doon must uncover in their quest to save the City.

CITY OF EMBER, a Walden Media and Playtone co-production, was directed by Academy Award® nominee Gil Kenan ("Monster House") and was produced by Playtone's Gary Goetzman and Tom Hanks. The film stars Academy Award® nominee Bill Murray, Academy Award® nominee Saoirse Ronan, Academy Award® winner Tim Robbins, Academy Award® winner Martin Landau, Toby Jones and Harry Treadaway. The film is from a script by Caroline Thompson ("Edward Scissorhands") based on the best selling novel, The City of Ember, by Jeanne Duprau.
