Borders Picks the Best of Bond
James Bond may be everyone's favorite secret agent, but the real debate begins with everyone's favorite Bond. Or Bond film. Or Bond girl… So with the release of Devil May Care, we decided to put things to a vote in six categories.
previous
Best Bond Gadget: The Jet Pack from Thunderball
next

Runner Up: The Ski Pole Gun from The Spy Who Loved Me
Others Receiving Votes: The Crocodile Mini Sub from Octopussy, The Exploding Bolas from Moonraker

Of all the props in Bond's arsenal, none got a rise out of audiences quite like the jet pack from Thunderball, which 007 used to make a neat escape. It might have looked unbelievable, but the thing really worked. Originally designed for the U.S. Army, the Bell Rocket Belt used compressed gas to lift a person almost 30 feet in the air. Its thrust might have been short lived (it could only last about 20 seconds), but its legacy in movie history is anything but. What's truly amazing is that Sean Connery actually managed to look suave while using it.

Comments

"The ski pole gun—talk about a niche gadget. Made especially for those times when Bond finds himself on a ski slope chasing (or being chased by) a villain who is also on the mountain on skis, it requires willfull suspension of disbelief."
—Suzanne Kowalchyk, Advertising Manager

"Simplicity is the most fun. I guess the shooting cigarette from You Only Live Twice deserves a vote, but come on! The exploding toothpaste from License to Kill? Love it."
—Shannon Lumetta, Creative Services Specialist
